first doctor's appointment
this morning virginia met her pediatrician, dr. miller. we are really happy with her- she is so nice and competent and very patient. it's an added bonus that her office is just a short walk from our house.
virginia is gaining weight well and is in perfect health.

today was our due date
it is hard to believe that it was estimated that virginia would be born today- yet we've had her for two weeks already.
we have been having a great time. it seems like every day gets better as we adjust to parenthood. we're managing to get a little more sleep (we quickly learned that virginia sleeps much better if she is nestled as close to one of us as humanly possible).
greg has really been looking forward to virginia trying out her toys. (he is going to be such a fun dad!) so we decided to get out our "tiny love gymini". we were surprised that she seemed to like it so much right away. she enjoyed looking around at all the dangling toys. it really is great that she has these alert periods now.

2nd week update
hi everyone! i know you would all like to see more photos and i swear we try to take them and find time to put them online but it can be challenging to find a spare moment. virginia keeps us busy. she is a wonderful baby and we are so happy. she is beginning to have more awake time in between eating and sleeping and that has been fun. she looks around the house in wonder. we play a game with her- one of us will stick out our tongue and she gets really fascinated and holds eye contact and then sticks out her tongue. it is so awesome. we can't believe that just a short while ago, she was living inside me and now she's here, among all of us in the world.
virginia is a thin baby- not skinny, she is just kind of lean and very strong. she kicks really hard. they say that as a baby, i had very strong legs so i think she gets this from me. then again, greg's the one who ran a marathon so maybe we both contributed. she is also extremely flexible: she pulls her knees up so incredibly high. it reminds me of a frog and i call her "Froggy" when she does that. she makes funny noises, sighing and squeaking from time to time, which makes us laugh. she also smiles. mostly in her sleep but once she looked at me and smiled and then looked over at greg and smiled. it was great! her favorite thing in the world is to be as physically close to one of us as possible. she is utterly content when hanging out or sleeping on one of our chests or in our arms and it is quite rare for her to be anywhere else because we love having her close too.

first bath. (carefully cropped since it was going online!) i once heard that newborns prefer a bath with mom because they feel unsettled when their skin slips & slides within the tub and their mom's body gives them a sense of security. i wasn't sure how virginia would react but she loved it. she became so calm as soon as she was in the water in my arms.
finger-feeding- for anyone who hasn't heard, we've had some difficulty nursing and for the time being, i'm pumping and we're feeding her with this syringe. we hope to get back on track asap.

our first day trying out our cloth diapers. they're so huge on virginia! but comfy

our first outing- nothing too ambitious- we just walked to the mailbox. the hat kara made for her kept her warm.

our daughter arrives!
we are thrilled to announce the arrival of our baby, virginia hanson rodriguez! she was born on december 28, 2008 at 11:26 p.m., weighing 7 lbs. 6 oz.
she is named after my very dear and beloved grandmother, Grandma Reis.
the birth was amazing! it all happened incredibly quickly, but we got our wish to have a natural birth at the birth center. it was awesome to be in such a nurturing and peaceful environment. i especially loved that they did not interfere with us as a new family or take virginia away for any tests or anything. we all had a chance to get to know each other uninterrupted and it was beautiful. the birth center puts photos of all the babies born there on their website, which you can check out here.
virginia is a very healthy and gorgeous baby and greg and i have totally fallen for her. she has already changed so much in just a few days.
we are finding that we have very little time to do anything other than take care of her and ourselves and that is why it took me so long to get online to post this. no matter how often you hear that being the parents of a newborn leaves you sleep-deprived and without spare time, it just is hard to fathom until you experience it (or least it has been for me). so thank you for all the emails and please know that we are thinking of you even if we can't find the time to call or email just yet.
but even though we are busy, we are in a blissful state and just having a blast taking care of our daughter.
